The jury was composed of the following people: Ronald Wielinga from Wetsus, startup coach Frans Nauta and investing expert Ed Flohr.  They selected these startups based on criteria like market opportunities, contribution to sustainability and suitability for the BeStart accelerator. Ronald Wielinga noticed the participants are in a relative advanced stage of their development. ‘They are already quite close to the market and sometimes just need a little push in the right direction to establish substantial growth.’ Project director Mariken Gaanderse is really looking forward to working with these startups: ‘This year’s lineup consists of very strong startups working on a great mix of clean tech themes. ‘

Programme 2020-2021 closes with original DemoDay

What a year it was for our 2020-2021 startups. In spite of the Corona19 setback, which made not only meeting each other more difficult, but also made growing their businesses even harder than it already is, they persevered and kept on working on making this world a cleaner place. So a big shoutout to Dungse, Eatcup, Fertipaq, Powerchainger, Pyrolyze, Sensoty and Wasted!

Concerned cleantech network

The DemoDay on April 12th was a special one. Using a new online tool called, not only the startups had the opportunity to learn. The visitors had to make their way to dedicated startup rooms, where they could meet the founders, spar with them about their most pressing questions, but also talk to each other as if they were meeting each other again after a long time. This led to inspiring and sometimes also hilarious moments. Thanks to our concerned cleantech network for the never ending support to our startups!

Although we let our 2020-2021 batch go as alumni, this doesn’t really mean goodbye. We’ll follow their growth and keep you posted through our social channels and newsletter below on this page.

Looking forward to the 2021-2022 startups

It is almost time for the 6th BeStart year to start. On April 19th we will have a closed event for the candidate startups, from which a jury will chose the most suitable ones for our 2021-2022 accelerator. If you like us to keep you posted, please subscribe to our newsletter below.

More info about these startups.

The jury, consisting of Henk Split from YnBusiness, Carl Schultz from Paques, Diederik Jongema from FOM and Anne Been from Enablemi, judged the startups based on a few important criteria. For example market chances, contribution to a sustainable world and suitability for the BeStart accelerator. ‘Although the pitches were held using videoconferencing, the quality was very high,’ commented project director Ronald Wielinga at the end of an intense afternoon. ‘We were very impressed by the creativity and the enthousiasm of the companies and we have been able to select some amazing startups. The coming year, we are going to help them to make large steps!’

Why follow through in times of Corona?

The accelerator programme starts in April with online sessions, despite the Corona crisis. ‘Especially in these times, we have to help vulnerable companies like startups’ concluded Ronald Wielinga. ‘Making the right entrepeunerial choices is more important than ever. In our knowledge and coaching programme we will give these aspects extra priority. Of course we will also be available to our alumni.’

March 26th Startup selection day for 2020 – 2021

Thursday March 26th, we will select the cleantech startups that will participate in our 2020 – 2021 accelerator programme! The candidates will pitch for a diverse jury from our BeStart network. Due to the Corona virus, the pitches will take place online, using Microsoft Teams.

On Friday march 27th we will publish the final lineup on our website, Twitter and LinkedIn!

DemoDay 16 March cancelled due to Corona virus

Due to the Corona virus, we have decided to postpone next week’s DEMO day to a later date this year. The DEMO day on March 16 in the Biosintrum is therefore unfortunately canceled.

In total almost 100 people registered to be present at this DEMO day. A fantastic number that we at BeStart are extremely proud of. But we don’t want to take any health risks and that’s why we decided to organise the afternoon at a later time. We expect this to be in June when hopefully the Corona virus has left our country. Of course we will send you an e-mail as soon as we know what the new date for the DemoDay will be.

During the DEMO day, besides the closing of BeStart 4, the selection moment for our new batch of startups was planned. We will organise this selection in a smaller committee later in March, so that the program can still start in April and we will therefore not be delayed.

Thank you for your understanding!

Kind regards

Ronald Wielinga

BeStart worksession January 20th: demo at recycling station Omrin

Monday January 20th our startups had their worksession at Omrin in Heerenveen.

In the moring they had a peek (and sniff 😷) at the recycling station in Heerenveen. CEO John Vernooij (also our chairperson) told them his entrepeneur story with some strong advice:

‘Know what is your focus and what not. Be the best in your field. And whatever happens, there is always a plan B’

One of the startup CEO’s Linda Dijkshoorn commented it as “Best tour of the year. Companies like Omrin turn our current lifestyle to a more sustainable one by recycling and treating our waste in an incredibly innovative manner. But my Lord, we should ban single use plastics… it is scary to see how much is thrown out….”

In the afternoon Martin Tietema, who participated in our programme in 2017-2018, told our startups about the growth of his company Foamplant and the challenges he faced leading his company it to success. More about his company in this radiopodcast!

Next stop: Annemieke Mintjes and storytelling on February 10th. Looking forward to it!
